Heating failures in schools of Dneprodzerzhinsk cause extensive closures and diseases among pupils
Annual school closures are a in the Ukrainian city a vicious tradition by having adverse educational impacts.The organization "Voice of Nature" disagrees with the official version and blames poor heating conditions for the mass diseases.

In February, seven schools in the Ukrainian city Dneprodzerzhinsk had to be closed for quarantines due to illness of children. This is symbolic for the high amount of closures in the region of Dnipropetrovsk, where about 91.000 children (32%) are currently not enrolled in school.
While the severe measures are officially justified by a 'flu epidemic', the environmental organization "Voice of Nature" points rather to the poor heating conditions of schools in the region.
Dnipropetrovsk is the Ukrainian region with the highest rate of influenza and acute respiratory diseases among children. This causes a vicious tradition of annual school closures due to quarantine in winter with having adverse educational impacts. According to "Voice of Nature", the high spread of ill children must not only be linked with influenza but also with the heating conditions in schools. On account of this, childrens health is mainly affected by the cold temperatures in class, dry air due to violations of ventilation modes and the use of spiral heaters.
"Voice of Nature" studied the heating situation in Dneprodzerzhinsk region within the scope of the project CLEEN (Civil society Local Energy Efficiency Network) for more than six months. The organization detected for instance broken heating systems in almost every school built in the 1980s. In order to avoid a mass disease of children in next winter, "Voice of Nature" recommends local authorities to invest in school insulations and restauration of heating systems.
