WECF´s Alexandra Caterbow making a comment at IPEN meeting in San Francisco
WECF participated in IPEN’s 2016 Global Meeting and Toxic-Free Future Forum, took place 14 - 18 November in San Francisco.
The event brought together more than 120 environmental, health and human rights leaders from 55 countries working locally and globally to ensure a just and healthy future for everyone by eliminating harm to human health and the environment from toxic chemicals. Within this meeting IPEN’s stimulated rich discussion and cross-cultural interactions that broaden and deepen the collaborative global movement for a toxics-free future.
Sustainable Chemistry – working on a NGO position
In frame of the Global Meeting and the sections on SAICM and a Post 2020 SAICM process WECF conducted a workshop on Sustainable Chemistry (SC) funded by the German Ministry of Environment. Focus of the workshop was the question what SC is about and if SC could be a proper approach of reaching a toxic- free future. Participants from more than 10 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America came together to make an initial step on developing their position on SC, its benefits and challenges. WECF could gain KEN Geiser, Professor Emeritus, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, University of Massachusetts Lowell, author of the book “Chemicals without harms” to give his idea on SC.
Besides this Workshop on Sustainable Chemistry, WECF chaired the session EDC Developments: International Policy Landscape. This session presented policy efforts to address EDCs, looking at developments in the EU, US, South Africa and the United Nations. WECF as well gave presentation in frame of the session Women’s Rights: Gender & Toxic Chemicals. The aim of this session is to discuss women’s particular vulnerabilities and differential exposures to toxic chemicals. We will discuss the need for women’s rights, equality, and empowerment; and women as agents of change in the struggle to protect our children and future generations.
