In the Balkan region a big gap exists in access to basic infrastructure between the population living in rural and urban areas. Exactly the reason why WECF´s Dr. Claudia Wendland states sustainable and alternative technologies are needed for waste and wastewater management in rural areas. "Closing the loop should be the principle within these technologies".
Water, nutrients and organic matter can be recycled if innovative technologies are implemented and spread further, such as the technologies which have been demonstrated in these three target areas: eco sanitation, composting and greywater soil filtration. Dr Ion Shalaru, representative of Institute for Public Health in Moldova gave an impression of a successful story on ecological sanitation in Moldova.
On May 9th, 2017 WECF gathered with her partners in Sarajevo to host the final conference of the project which had been implemented since 2015. 42 participants (such as scientists, representatives from UNEP, National health and environment agencies, NGOs, and media) from 7 countries met to discuss the further diffusion of sustainable technologies in rural areas in the Balkan Region. The project addressed the problem of drinking water contamination (caused by widely inadequate sanitation in rural areas in the Western Balkans), poor management of water resources, intensive use of chemical fertilizers, and unsafe disposal of waste in the villages Jabolce (Mk), Gorica (B-H) and Daragiat (Al).
