First step for better EDC criteria

Environment Committee European Parliament voted today to object to proposed European Commission criteria to identify EDCs (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals)

The Environment Committee of the European Parliament today voted to object to the proposed European Commission criteria to identify endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with 36 supporting/26 against and 0 abstentions.

MEPs of the committee recognised that the proposal is both: insufficient to protect human health and the environment and unlawful, thereby acknowledging the warning signals coming from international scientific societies, the EDC- Free Europe coalition, public health voices, various legal analyses as well as the concerns raised by some 300,000 citizens over the last days. WECF welcomes that first step which might open the door for better criteria and more protection from EDCs.

The final hurdle to stop the EU Commission’s proposal from becoming EU law is next Tuesday 3rd October. The entire European Parliament will meet in Strasburg and all the MEPs will have to give their final say on the European Commission criteria. WECF undersigned letters to MEPs from The Netherlands, from Belgium and from Germany for the EP plenary of 3/10 with the request to reject EDC criteria.

Your help is crucial!

That is why it is very important to stay mobilised in the next days and weekend to continue to ask MEPs to reject the Commission proposal for criteria.

  • If you have 30 seconds, please sign the SumofUs - EDC Free Europe petition to urge your MEP to say NO to hormone disrupting chemicals in EnglishFrench or German.
  • If you have 5 minutes, please make use of the FREE SumofUs - EDC Free Europe call-in tool (available in EnglishFrench and Spanish) to share your concerns directly on the phone with your MEP.
  • If you have 10 minutes, spread the word with your family and friends by sharing the petition and encouraging them to give their own MEPs a call.

Let’s raise our voices and let MEPs know that we want an EDC-Free future!
