CSW62: side event on SDGs monitoring, with best practices from Women2030

The event is an official side event to the sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62), at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (12-23 March, 2018).
About event
By many gender equality advocates, the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015 was perceived as a global victory. Not only did United Nations Member States commit to transforming our world into one where sustainability, equality, peace and human progress become a reality for all countries and all people. They also recognized that gender equality is central to this transformative vision: an important goal in and of itself and a condition for progress across many other goals and targets. With the countdown to 2030 well underway, questions of monitoring progress for women and girls in a meaningful way and strengthening accountability for commitments made but not met have become ever more pressing. The side event will bring together different stakeholders to discuss these questions and share their approaches.
Background
The event will be framed by a presentation of UN Women’s global monitoring report Turning Promises into Action: Gender Equality in the 2030 Agenda. The report provides a comprehensive and authoritative assessment of progress, gaps and challenges in the implementation of the SDGs. It shows that gender equality is central to the achievement of all 17 SDGs; assesses gender data gaps and challenges for robust global monitoring; and sets an agenda for strengthening accountability for gender equality commitments at the global, regional and national level.
WECF will present our women2030's approach to monitoring the gender-just implementation of the SDGs on the ground. Covering 50 countries, the programme places emphasis on capacity-building, civil society-led gender assessments, shadow reports and regular web-based monitoring. First approaches have been developed and tested by programme partners who will present their methodologies and preliminary findings at the panel (with participants from Nigeria and Kyrgyzstan). Women2030 is funded by the EU and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit)
