Winners announced of WECF Ecosan Toilet Photo Competition

Oleg Rotari, Knarik Grigoryan and Surayo Saidova of Ormax are winners of the WECF Ecosan Toilet Photo Award

21.03.2013 | WECF

WECF challenged it partners last year to participate in a photo competition entitled: “Portray your school or kindergarten’s ecosan toilet”.  The jury, hosted by Claudia Wendland, WECFs Sanitation Expert, selected a winner and two runners-up, Knarik Grigoryan of AWHHE, Armenia, and Surayo Saidova of ASDP Nau, Tajikistan.

The photo competition launched in December 2012 is part of WECFs work on raising visibility for sanitation and the importance of (dry) ecological and sustainable sanitation for children. Starting as a pioneer in the nineties with Urine Dry Diverting Toilets (UDDT), WECF has implemented with local partners more than 50 school and kindergarten UDDTs and 1000 individual toilets in 13 countries.

Besides developing sustainable and innovative sanitation systems, WECF supports local water committees  and schools for developing local Water Safety Plans, that play a crucial role in the economic development of rural communities. WECF is also a staunch supporter of the human right to water and sanitation in the current European wide campaign against privatization.

The winner of the photo competition, Oleg Rotari of the Moldovan NGO Ormax, entered the competition with a picture of a smiling boy sitting half outside a toilet building.  The jury selected this picture because of its technical quality and the originality of the picture. Decisive though, was the way he pictured the smile of this boy knowing a hygienic indoor sustainable toilet was close by, with the toilet being hardly visible. Or as WECF Graphic Designer Veronique Grassinger stated:”It shows without showing, his smile says everything” .
The 2nd and 3rd price go to photos of hand washing children highlighting the need for hand washing after going to the toilet. WECF toilets are always equipped with hand wash basins.

Oleg Rotari will receive the Award during the official celebrations of World Water Day in The Hague from WECFs Adviser on Water and Food Safety Margriet Samwel-Mantingh.
The other prize winners  will receive 75 and 25 euro.
