The case study mainly focuses on the lack of safe water and poor sanitation in one target village Suqovsan as an example. Most households in the village use heavily polluted river water for consumption and personal hygiene needs. Delivered via channels, this water is not safe for human, particularly children, health and is treated as a main cause of infectious diseases such as dysentery.
To improve living conditions, WECF conducted training for local teachers, who developed Water Safety Plans afterwards and established a working group of local pupils. Water from the channel provided to the villagers for drinking purposes was analysed by a certified laboratory on bacteria, salts and some metal elements. As a possible short-term solution, WECF presented Tulip water filters that are developed for an easy handling on household level to remove particles and bacteria in water.
The 2-years project, carried out from 2009 till 2011 in 5 villages in the region Sabirabad of Azerbaijan, was implemented by WECF, a local partner NGO EKOT and the people from target villages with a financial support of the European Union and the Finnish Ministry. The project aimed to improve living conditions in semi-arid rural areas with scarce groundwater resources, where the local population suffers from poor sanitation, high lack of access to safe drinking water and energy, and experiences high rate of unemployment.
