Het TTIP verdrag

Algemene gezondheid of persoonlijk gewin?

De VS onderhandelt al een paar jaar met de Europese Unie (EU) over een nieuw handelverdrag, het Transatlantische Handels en Investerings Partnerschap (TTIP). Dit verdrag is een bedreiding voor EU’s mogelijkheid om haar burgers te beschermen voor chemische blootstelling.

WECF roept samen met 27 andere niet-gouvernementele organisaties op om chemicalien in zijn geheel uit de onderhandelinggesprekken tussen de VS en de EU te halen.
 
Hoe kunnen we dat bereiken?
De Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) en de Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) hebben eind april een nieuwe campagne gelanceerd om de Europese inspanningen om haar burgers en milieu te beschermen te ondersteunen. De nieuwe campagnewebsite is: www.tradinghealthforprofit.wordpress.com.

Ook kan Twitter gebruikt worden voor deze campagne. Gebruik @TTIPingToxics om campagne-materiaal op sociale media te delen, om momentum te creeren en om het bewustzijn onder burgers over TTIP en chemicalien te vergroten.
Een groot aantal NGO´s, waaronder WECF, hebben zich bij deze campagne aangesloten.

Daarnaast hebben CIEL, HEAL, het Europees Milieubureau (EEB) en ClientEarth een brief gestuurd naar de Eurocommisaris voor Handel, mevrouw Cecilia Malmström, om haar ervan te overtuigen dat ze ervoor zorgt dat alle aspecten van EU’s deregulerende agenda niet worden vastgelegd in TTIP.

In het bijzonder vragen wij dat:
•    Chemicalien worden uitgesloten van regulerende samenwerking omdat het zorgt voor nieuwe wegen waarlangs private winst kan worden behaald bij het opstellen of herzien van EU wetten
•    Geen elementen van het controversiele EU beleid ‘’Betere Regulatie’’ worden opgenomen in een legaal bindend handelsverdrag
•    Geen maatregel wordt opgenomen die ervoor zorgt dat multinationals de Europese rechtbanken en lidstaten kunnen omzeilen, de zogenoemde Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) ofwel Investment Court System.
