EU Parliamentarians water down draft EU chemicals reform

Members of the IMCO and ITRE committees of the European Parliament
yesterday passed amendments that if adopted by plenary would further
dilute the draft chemicals law called REACH. The changes include
amendments which lower the reuqirements on industry to deliver data on
chemicals with an annual production volume between 1-10t. Roughly
20.000 chemicals are concerned by this. According to WECF REACH Expert
Daniela Rosche "any changes of this sort render the entire reform
redundant."" Parlamentarians have clearly failed to understand the why
we need REACH- because we are currently missing data on the majority of
chemicals on the EU market. How are we supposed to find out if a
chemical is threatening the health of women, children and even baby's
if again, industry is let of its responsibility to deliver that data?
On Monday night WECF in a last minute action sent
a letter to key IMCO members outlining our concerns and
reminding them of their duty to protect the health of women and future
generations in Europe.
