New ecosan household in Vorokhta in the Ukraine

Dry urine-diverting toilet for household; testing new sanitation model in a rural village

17.09.2005 |Margriet Samwel

The project team of the local NGO MAMA-86 celebrates the opening of the econsan toilet

MAMA-86 Yeremche, WECF's partner in the MATRA project "Sustainable
Rural Development", has build as a demonstration object the first
household ecological toilet in Ukraine.

The new dry urine-diverting toilet build as a demonstration object in the village of Vorokhta, Ukraine

The toilet separates urine and feacal material, which are stored and
sceptized (urine) and composted (feacals) so that both end-products can
be used as ferzilizer and humus in horticulture and agriculture.

MAMA-86 Yeremche organised a seminar for the inhabintants of the
village to explain the functioning of the ecosan toilet. There was a
lot of interest. Educational posters were produced and there is
interest from other families to exchange their pit-latrines (a hole in
the ground, often polluting ground-water sources) to the new ecosan
model.
