Clean, clever and competitive from a citizen’s perspective
WECF International High-Level Roundtable on Environmental Health aspects of the Lisbon Agenda and the SDS, Nov 27, Brussels
29.11.2006 |Irma Thijssen
WECF invited key scientists to present new scientific views and evidence on the Environmental Burden of Disease and discuss these with members of the EU Commission, Member State governments, members of the European Parliament, and opinion leaders from business and civil society.
The discussion focussed on how the EU Lisbon Strategy and policy development can better incorporate reduction and prevention of environmental pollution so as to decrease the environmental burden of disease, lower societal costs of illness and health damage, and better integrate citizen's environmental health concerns as a prerequisite for sound economic development.
During the round table.
Two internationally renowned scientists - Prof. Philippe Grandjean and Dr. John Peterson Myers - presented new scientific approaches to the environmental burden of disease and examples of the (increasing) effects on public health.
Results from the foregoing International Expert Workshop on the Environmental Burden of Disease, organised by WECF on April 23rd in Brussels, served as basis for the discussion. Participants in the discussion also included Chemical Industry, Trade Unions, Women's Organizations and Environmental NGOs.
