Workshop „Towards a Toxic Free Future“ (Impact of toxic chemicals on the Environment and Public health in Central Asia: Ways to address problems)

The workshop has been organised by WECF member GREENWOMEN, Kazakhstan, Lydia Astanina. Approximately 20 – 30 persons attended the workshop. The following countries have been represented by NGO staff and/or state representatives: Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Participants from
Turkmenistan could not come due to political uncertainties. In general it had been a very active audience with many fruitful discussions.

Fantastic progress has been made due to the IPEP-1 program - the 2 Mio funding from GEF during the last two years (and the excellent work of Olga!) 300 NGOs in the EECA region (except Tajikistan) were involved and 22 Projects have been launched mainly in two topics: awareness raising about banned and prohibited pesticides and doing an inventory of stockpiles in all project countries.

Greenwoman Report

The sub-regional workshop entitled "TOWARDS A TOXIC FREE FUTURE”
(Impact of Toxic Chemicals on the Environment and Public Health in Central Asia: Ways to Address Problems) was held on 11-13 February 2007 in Almaty.

The workshop was organized by "Greenwomen" Ecological News Agency (Kazakhstan) and with financial
Support from Marisla Foundation (USA).

The workshop was attended by representatives of environmental ministries, sanitary and epidemiological units, scientists, business structures, Central Asian NGOs, and international organizations.
