Solar collector training in Bishkek

WECF together with Social Union “Agerkech” and Kyrgyz State Technical University (KSTU) department Renewable Sources of Energy, has conducted a theoretical and practical trainings on construction of solar collectors which was financially supported by the Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs.
The access to hot water is an issue of personal hygiene and comfort. For the rural population the hot water access implies a lot of difficulties, first of all, financial issues. People are forced to use expensive electricity or coal. Solar collector, constructed on the principle of thermo siphon, doesn’t need any financial expenses during maintaining. Moreover, thermo siphon solar collector is a passive system, which means it doesn’t use any electrical pumps. Thus, there isn’t any necessity in additional electricity for an electrical pump.
Kyrgyzstan is a country of intensive solar radiation and the solar collectors construction in such country is very cost-effective. SU “Agerkech” has built 3 types of solar collectors in Bakay-Ata village near Bishkek. The main goal was to construct solar collector, working with thermo-siphon principle and made from local materials. The rural population and low-income families without an access to electricity will have an opportunity to have hot water all year around.
At 25 august about 20 participants from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan gathered at the poly-technical university. Proff. Obozov started with an introduction renewable energy solutions in Kyrgyzstan and addressed that in principle Kyrgyzstan has the potential to transform to a fossil-free country however efficient ways to implement new technologies are still lacking.
In the next day a practical day had been organized by Agerkech. Participants got the opportunity to make show model (cross-section) of a solar collector in 3 variations: copper welding, copper clip and aluminum clip. The clip variant has been invented by Fin of Mr Kerr MacGregor, Scottish expert in renewable energy. A French student Jacques Simon from Savoie Unerversity in Annecy, France has constructed this model from local materials in Bakai-Ata. In the end of the day more then 10 organizations could bring one show model to their office.
Another special guest had come from Georgia: Rostom Gamisonia, who told the group about his experiences in Georgia on solar collectors and creating a businesses/demonstration/training center. We had a speaker from Slavic University, Michail Toropov who had done interesting analyses with a cheaper variant of solar collectors made from plastic pipes (PE). Carl Uyttenhaege from Belgium who established a organization called Greenbridge outlined the essential aspects of successful business in the field of renewable energy.
In the afternoon it was time for cut and paste work. Different elements of solar collectors had to be put on paper and connected with blue and red lines representing cold and warm water. Participants experience that in a presentation a scheme looks simple but to make it by one self is not that easy. We had amazing designs followed by interesting discussions.
The workshop and seminar gave an opportunity to share the experience not only of Kyrgyzstan, but also the experience of universities (KSTU, Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University) and other countries (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Belgium, Georgia). After training assessment revealed that people generally enjoyed the seminar, especially the practical part in the Demonstration center of SU “Agerkech”. Some people suggested to prolong the practical training for more than 2 days.
