Sascha Gabizon gives intervention
The Beijing+20 Regional Review Meeting addressed key areas of progress and challenges in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in the UNECE member States. It focused on such issues as long-term trends in gender equality and the empowerment of women, women’s representation and leadership in decision-making, eliminating violence against women, anti-discriminatory legislation and gender justice. WECF executive director Sascha Gabizon was part of the opening panel.
During her final intervention, Gabizon stated the outcome of the meeting should recommend as next steps:
- All UNECE member states to sign and ratify the Istanbul Convention, the CEDAW and its protocols;
- The translation into national law of the Beijing PFA and the other international resolutions including UN Resolution 1325;
- Implementation of the national gender equality legislation, ensuring human rights for all women and men;
- Allocate sufficient public budgets to achieve this implementation.
Gabizon ended her final intervention with specific needs of women in the Eastern European and Central Asian countries, arguing the UNECE member states should:
- Sustain the achievement already made in many of these countries, support their national gender equality plans, women’s full participation in decision-making and a.o. introducing quota systems for elections;
- Sustain their work on ending violence against women and girls;
- Sustain their work on women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship;
- Sustain their work on increasing rural women’s access to water, sanitation, energy, food security, micro-credit at affordable interest rates;
- Provide support to address the emerging challenges of climate change, disaster risk reduction and increasing fundamentalism;
- Provide support and enable legislation for Civil Society Organisations.
