Ecosan for Sulitsa - video documentary on safe sustainable sanitation in Bulgaria

On how modern low cost sanitary approaches provide a solution to sanitation problems in rural areas in Eastern Europe

25.07.2008

Documentary on Sulitsa, a typical small mountainous village in Stara Zagora Municipality in central Southern Bulgaria. Sultisa has 260 inhabitants spread over 180 households, comprising mostly aged retirees. The Houses are connected to a local centralized water supply system.

Drinking water tests have shown that the nitrate levels are hardly below the maximum allowed by WHO and Bulgarian legislation of 50 mg/l. this pollution can be partly traced back to the sanitation practises in the village, which do not meet the requirements for adequate human waste and wastewater management.

During the 2,5 year project, Developing a Model for Sustainable Water and Waste Management in Rural Areas in Bulgaria, three complete EcoSan systems were built in this village to demonstrate effective, low cost alternatives to the conventional systems. The documentary shows the construction of the demonstration EcoSan systems and the inauguration event organized by the village women's club, White Rose, and the vision of the project leader Mrs. Diana Iskreva, Executive Director of Earth Forever Foundation. The documentary illustrates that modern lowcost approaches can provide an immediate solution to the health and environnemental problems related to sanitation in rural areas of Eastern Europe. The results of the demonstration systems could be an inspiration for future programmes for wastewater and sanitation of the Bulgarian governement and the EU.  Total duration: 9.41 minutes.
