www.projectnesting.org helps European parents-to-be create a healthy surrounding for their child in six languages

“Healthy products are the best that parents can do for their baby”, emphasises Sonja Haider, WECF Director, chemical expert and initiator of the website. “More and more studies show how sensitive babies are to toxic chemicals and environmental impacts, especially during the first months of their life. It is here that parents can create the foundation for a healthy immune system by selecting the right products and adapting their behaviour to the health requirements of the child. Preventing illnesses and dangers, this is where www.projectnesting.org helps with the choice of products and behaviour.”
The need for information is great. Examples from midwives highlight this aspect. Believing that the child will benefit, rooms are painted only shortly before the arrival of the baby and mattresses are left in their packaging so that they remain new and clean. The subsequently emitted fumes impact the health of the child. An increased risk of allergies can be the consequence.
The pages cover “renovating”, “furnishing” and “living” and contain many positive tips about painting walls, buying furniture, airing rooms, and purchasing toys and child care products. The visitor will find out which ingredients are harmful to health, how to prevent injuries and what things are really necessary for babies.
Parents should look for the German “Blue Angel”, EU “Flower” or the “nature-Plus” eco-labels. They guarantee health and environmental compatibility. The “GS mark” for certified safety and magazines such as “Ökotest” and “Testmagazin” help an informed choice. Sonja Haider also advises parents to trust their intuition. “Paints, carpets and furniture that have a strange smell or cuddly toys that feel strange should be discarded. Normal activities, such as airing a room are essential for a healthy indoor air quality. Airing new products is just as important. Smoking in the presence of children must be banned”.
Instead of looking at individual product groups, the website covers an entire phase of the child’s life. It is a guide for parents and all people for whom a child’s health is paramount.
www.projectnesting.org is a European project and will go online in six languages in six different countries.
