EU toys directive – new proposal does not include all dangerous substances
Various toxic substances continue to be permitted – WECF demands a general ban on dangerous chemicals in toys (Text in German)

Munich, 30.06.2008 –
The EU commission has presented a new proposal for the EU toys directive to be approved by the European Parliament at the end of this year.
WECF has deeply criticized this proposal, because toxic substances such as CMR (cancerogen, mutagen
and reprotoxic) chemicals and traces of allergens continue to be permitted in
toys. PBT and vPvB (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) substances are not
even mentioned in the report. Sonja Haider, director WECF Germany, therefore claims for a general ban on harmful substances

Earlier on this year WECF had already reacted on the draft proposal presented by the European Commission in January.

München, 30.06.2008 – Die EU-Kommission hat einen Überarbeitungsvorschlag für die EU-Spielzeugrichtlinie vorgelegt, der vergangenen Mittwoch im Ausschuss für Binnenmarkt und Verbraucherschutz von der Berichterstatterin Marianne Thyssen präsentiert wurde. Der Bericht liegt seit Mitte der Woche vor. Noch ist Zeit, diesen Vorschlag zu verbessern, bevor er vom Europäischen Parlament voraussichtlich Ende dieses Jahres endgültig beschlossen wird.
Die europäische Frauen- und Umweltorganisation Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF) kritisiert diesen Bericht vehement, da zahlreiche gefährliche Inhaltsstoffe wie krebserregende, erbgut- und fortpflanzungsschädigende (CMR-)Chemikalien unter bestimmten Umständen weiterhin in Kinderspielzeug erlaubt sind. Andere gefährliche Inhaltsstoffe wie endokrine Stoffe oder persistente, bioakkumulative und toxische Chemikalien (PBT und vPvB) sind in der Richtlinie nicht einmal erwähnt.
