WECF workshop in Kygryzstan: Sustainable sanitation - our standard
How can sustainable sanitation be reached in Kyrgyzstan? The workshop was conducted in the framework of the WECF ELA program, funded by the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs.

WECF workshop on sustainable sanitation in Kyrgyzstan
33 representatives of 15 NGOs, local state authorities, and school directors from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and WECF met to discuss sustainable sanitation in Central Asia
From November 13 – 15, the participants of the workshop met at lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan to exchange their practical experiences, discuss the most actual issues, and plan for the further upscaling of sustainable approaches in Central Asia. For the workshop, the Open Space Technology was used. Facilitator Sergey Laboda, Minsk, noted the exceptionally high level of motivation and commitment of the participants.
The participants joined for 14 substantial conversations upon the following topics: definition of sustainable sanitation standards for Central Asia, construction of soil filters and toilets, with special attention to construction schemes and prices, using and maintaining, reuse of nutrients, how to make sustainable sanitation wider known and applied, and funding possibilities and mechanisms.
Participants agreed to continue with intensifying knowledge exchange among interested organizations and individuals, elaborating an affordable small scale sanitation system consisting of dry-urine diverting toilets and soil filters adapted to Central Asian conditions and needs, elaborate a model educational programme on sustainable sanitation, set up several information centers. For further upscaling of the approach, participants emphasized the importance of cooperation with religious leaders and authorities.
