Endocrine Society and IPEN issue guide to EDCs

A guide to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been published by two international NGOs, ahead of a key meeting next week of the UN’s voluntary chemicals management programme, the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (Saicm).

The guide includes an introduction to the human endocrine system, gives examples of substances the authors claim are EDCs, and describes the health effects which they say can be linked to such chemicals.

It also includes examples of human exposure to them, such as from the use of lead in electronic products and of bisphenol A in food contact materials.

EDCs are one of the “emerging issues” covered by the SAICM programme, and the meeting this week of its open-ended working group may decide how the issue should be addressed at the next SAICM International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4), which will be held in September 2015.

The NGOs which produced the guide, both US-based, are the Endocrine Society, made up of scientists and healthcare professionals from across the globe, and the International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN), which helps build capacity in its member organisations around the world.
