WECF held a one day training on Water and Sanitation Safety Plans (WSSP), 20th of September, at Technical University of Dresden as part of the CIPSEM International Short Course on Integrated Water Resource Management and Health.This course constitutes a contribution to environmental capacity building for the protection and sustainable use of the available water resources as outlined in target 6 of the agenda 2030, with emphasis on human health issues. The course addresses both water quantity and quality issues within an integrated water management, covering effective regulations, robust policies and appropriate technologies.
The concept of WSSP was presented by Dr. Claudia Wendland and Bistra Mihaylova in front of 24 participants from different governmental institutions and other stakeholders from Africa, South America and Asia.
The training focused on WSSP, its implementation in rural and urban areas, school collaboration, officials’ and other stakeholders’ involvement .
The training was held in 2 parts. The first session covered the issue of drinking water, and participants gained significant knowledge in terms of background information, achievement and efficiency of Water Safety Plans. The second part was devoted to sanitation, focusing on different wastewater technologies, their implementation, and involvement in WSSPs.
The attendees then participated in group discussions where they had to share their experiences from their home countries; how the public and different stakeholders are involved in Water and Sanitation Safety Planning; what challenges there are in implementing them. Also, the means of water quality monitoring were discussed intensively.
