Claudia Wendland, WECF Sanitation Coordinator, published her doctoral dissertation in January 2009 which is now available for download.
Anaerobic digestion (AD) was investigated as an option for treatment of blackwater (toilet wastewater) within sustainable sanitation concepts. Based on the experimental and simulation results it could be proven that AD of combined blackwater from vacuum toilets and kitchen refuse has major advantages in terms of energy and water efficiency compared to conventional aerobic treatment. The digested output is rich in nutrients and can be applied as organic fertilizer in agriculture.
