WECF-publication: Introducing Sustainable Sanitation in Kyrgyzstan

Case Study: An analysis of success factors and barriers

21.04.2009

Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest countries in the EECCA region. The sanitaiton systems in the rural areas are mostly limited to pit latrines. Pit latrines are often not sealed and can polluted ground water and drinking water sources. Pit latrines also have to be outside the house, a disadvantage in cold winter times. The project described in this publication has introduced a new type of sanitation, dry urine diverting toilets, which can be build near on inside houses, do not smell and provide valuable nutrients for use in agriculture.
This publication is a case study presenting the results of a 2 year project where Urine Diversting Dry Toilets were tested in different sizes and types, as well as soil-filters for cleaning household wastewater, by 4 NGOs in Kyrgystan. The publication is based on a survey carried out at the start of the project and once the toilets were in use by the households, and porivdes information on experience of using a urine diverting toilet pan, cleaning and maintenance of the toilet and reuse of sanitized urine as fertilizer.
