UNEP 8th Civil Society Forum

Towards a UNEO and Civil Society Statement on Chemicals, Water, Globalization...

19.02.2007 |Sascha Gabizon

Dear all

Last week I took part in the Civil Society meeting of UNEP's governing council meeting in Nairobi. I am thankful to the Eco-Forum, ANPED and WECF organisations who elected me to be on the global civil society committee.

The civil society forum met on 3-4 February before the start of the Global Ministers Environment Forum. I coordinated the working group on chemicals. We stressed the need for a legally binding instrument on Mercury emissions and use,  a global ban on asbestos, halting export of used tires and electric and electronic equipment, and need for more financial support for SAICMs quick start programme.

Oleg Tsaruk of Eco-Forum worked with the globalization working group, which was very divided between the use of market based instruments to protect ecosystems, and protecting the rights of poor and indigenous peoples.  As Anna Golubovska of MAMA-86 Ukraine could unfortunately not attend, I  also contributed to the gender statement which was coordinated by Bettsy Apple of WEDO. With Jack Sim I contributed some input on sustainable sanitation to the water statement which was coordinated by Melanie Nakagawa of NRDC.

The Civil Society forum decided to create a working group on the environmental impacts of war and conflict.
