Energy efficient stoves and policy gaps under CDM

Article by Sabine Bock, WECF Energy Coordinator and Robert Mueller from Atmosfair for PICA bulletin

14.04.2010 |Sabine Bock and Robert Mueller

Current deficiencies of CDM and recommendations for making CDM accessible for pro-poor sustainable development and climate mitigation: Poor communities in developing and emerging countries suffer from limited access to clean energy, which heavily restricts their opportunities for economic development and education in a socially and environmentally sound way.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has not helped these communities to improve energy services, though one of its objectives is to support “sustainable
development,” in addition to reducing green house gases. Energy efficient stoves bear high potential for combining poverty reduction and mitigation of climate change.

PICA Bulletin

The PICA Bulletin provides information on the activities of the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) and its Partners around the world, and is intended to increase awareness and action on indoor air pollution, household energy and health. Regular features include spotlights on PCIA Partners, feature articles based on a thematic focus, and recent achievements and advances in household energy, indoor air pollution, and health.

The 23rd issue focuses on carbon finance and its potential to help grow and support sustainable household energy programs. Look inside for detailed information on carbon project implementers and developers, tools and resources, and advocacy and capacity building efforts to increase the number of registered cook stove projects in the CDM, Gold Standard and voluntary carbon markets. Feature articles from Partners engaged in all aspects of cookstove carbon finance are included. As always, this issue of the Bulletin contains information on upcoming events related to household energy, indoor air pollution and health.
