On the 8th March WECF wants to highlight the fact that environmental degradation has specific impacts on women’s health and can even amount to violence against women and girls.

Many human activities, such as mining and the use of chemicals can have an extreme impact on women’s living conditions, destroy the basis of their livelihoods and lead to irreversible damage to their health. Furthermore, the impact of climate change and the lack of the implementation of the human right to water and sanitation can also have severe effects on women. WECF therefore supports this statement of feminist and women's organisations on the trends in the negotiations of 57th Session of the Commission of the Status of Women. With the constant negotiations on the language of the outcome document, the UN's commitment on enforcing women's rights is gradually waning.

The 57th Session of the Commission of the Status of Women taking now place in New York takes up the issue of violence against women. WECF is part of the meeting presenting environmental degradation and its impact on women as one part of the thematic focus of this year’s session. See here for the full statement.
