Interventions during the Open Working Group meeting on Sustainable Development Goals

Interventions were made by Mette Kirstine Schmidt and Shannon Kowalski in the name of the Women Major Group (WMG).
On April 18th, Schmidt called for gender and women’s rights to be addressed explicitly in the SDGs to promote gender empowerment and equitable rights to resources, and for the SDGs to address, inter alia, climate change adaptation, volatility of food prices, education for women and girls, sexual and reproductive rights, commodification of nature, means of implementation, and monitoring and accountability, including through the use of data disaggregated on the basis of sex, age and other status.
On the following day Kowalski highlighted structural and institutional discrimination that has led to the “feminization of poverty.” She called for the full participation of women in the design and implementation of the SDGs, and made recommendations for the inclusion of, inter alia: reproductive rights; local agriculture; economic rights; decent work conditions; ending violence against women; and climate change.

The OWG was established on 22nd of January 2013 by the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly). The Member States have decided to use an innovative, constituency-based system of representation that is new to limited membership bodies of the General Assembly. This means that most of the seats in the OWG are shared by several countries. WECF is one of the core members of the WMG and is thus participating in the negotiations of the SDGs.
