11th Form pupils in Tadjikistan happy with their toilets "We never dared to visit the toilets on our own before"

“Our school toilet was built in 1987. The floor of the toilet was made from wooden planks. There are 700 students at the school and 400 of them are girls. The state of the toilet was awful. Half of the roof wasn’t there and some parts of the wall were breaking. When it rained it was not possible to use the toilet, because rain delved into the inside of the toilet and the wooden floor, which was already old and rotten, became slippery. Last year, during a visit to the toilet, the leg of one of my classmates slipped down into the toilet. Fortunately she wasn’t alone. Her classmate helped her to get out. We never dared to go to the toilets on our own before"

ASDP Nau, under the project framework "Eco-toilets with wash facilities for the school in Bobojon  Gafurov”, in cooperation with WECF and funded by Natracare, built a new school toilet.

This toilet is not the same as other any school toilet in the B. Gafurov district, because this toilet is an ecotoilet. They call it ecosan as well. We, as students of the school, were very interested to learn about the ecotoilet. We had not seen this type of toilet before, but some of us had heard about the ecosan in Spitamen district. We have learned about the use and benefits of this type of toilet during the training sessions.

Now we are happy that we have a good toilet. It is equipped with all the necessary items, there is water for washing hands, and there is even a hygienic space, which is very necessary for us girls. The girls of our school didn’t come to school during the menstruation period, because they hadn’t a safe place to go there, but now our new toilet has a door and roof, they are not afraid to attend school during the days they are menstruating.

I, on behalf of all pupils of our school, say thanks to ASDP Nau, WECF and NatraCare for an ecosan that will assist to improve the sanitation and hygiene conditions of our school.”

Guzal Nuralizoda, a pupil of the 11th form
