WECF is participating in the Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties (COP) to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions taking place from 24 April - 5 May, 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Although the Stockholm Convention COP is WECF’s main focus, WECF will also participate in the Basel and Rotterdam Convention meetings. Some of WECFs partners, such as Pesticide Action Network (PAN), ÍPEN, Basel Action Network (BAN), and Rotterdam Convention Alliance (ROCA), amongst others, will also be participating.
Protecting human health and the environment
The three conventions aim to protect human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and waste. The 2017 Conferences of the Parties will take place from 24 April to 5 May 2017 under the theme “A Future Detoxified: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste”. The High-Level Segment will have three main sub-themes:
- Opportunities for a detoxified future in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals;
- Opportunities for strengthened implementation through partnerships; and
- Opportunities for reducing waste and pollution while enabling economic and social prosperity.
Approximately 1,500 officials and stakeholders from countries around the world participate in the Conferences of the Parties with the High-Level Segment including some 95 ministers, deputy ministers and ambassadors
